NECROT - Mortal LP [RM150]
The overall illustrations painted by Marald Van Haasteren is simply mesmerizing. “Mortal” has brought us back to the earlier death metal frenziness in the 80s/90s especially carved by Carnage, Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse, Death, Dismember, Morbid Angel, Morgoth, Grave, Benediction etc, meanwhile pushing it even further in various intensity taken from ferocious crust to blasting grindcore to groovy thrash ‘speed’ metal ala Discharge, Carcass and Destruction. So far the similarity of “Mortal” can only be found in Revolting‘s “The Shadow at the World's End”. No kidding. We can further the argument, but choose not to. Ironically both have released in the same year. Okay, perhaps it’s because they’ve shared the same influences as abovementioned. However, tracks such as “Stench of Decay”, “Asleep Forever”, “Sinister Will” and “Malevolent Intentions” offer rapid tempos changing and variant speed packed with murderous riffs made “Mortal” stands out among the rest. Despite of the ‘accidental similarity’ (maybe it’s just us), “Mortal” is easily the best album of 2020.
